Alternative Breaks Site Leader
Alternative breaks is a service-learning program in which students are able to provide strong direct service for a specific social issue that they are passionate about. Through this program, we seek to make a difference in the community around us, and expand our knowledge on these problematic topics. As a group, students travel to different parts of the global community, where we provide a variety of services in social issues such as equal-education, poverty, homelessness, animal cruelty, gender identity, sexual orientation, women's rights, and many more.
I was a designated Site Leader for one of our many aB trips at FIU. The social issue that I worked on was At Risk Youth, in which I led a group of students to Central Florida in order to work with children affected by life threatening illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, sickle cell disease, in order to give them a memorable, joyous weekend that they'll be able to cherish. While there we worked alongside the nonprofit organization, Base Camp Children's Cancer Foundation, where our main focus was to host an open house/day camp for the children and families affected by these illnesses. It turned out to be a great day full of outdoor games and activities, water activities (fishing and speed boat ride), topped off with popcorn and a movie to wind down at the end of the day. The most inspirational saying that affected me that weekend:
:
"Bald is Beautiful."
