The Global Living Learning Community (GLLC) is on the 5th floor of Everglades Dormitory at FIU. It is a close-knit community, where students learn to prepare themselves for global leadership and engagement. “The goal of the program is to help residents become citizens of the world by bringing the world into the community through intercultural awareness, leadership development, experiential learning, and an introduction to a variety of campus, community, and global resources.”
Being in the community, it was a great learning experience; it sharpened my intercultural awareness through biweekly meetings and group presentations on current global events by us, the residents. Near the end of the semester, we hosted a discussion forum opened to university students focused on "Immigration." It turned out to be a success due to our strategic marketing and promoting to students and professors for extra credit points to their students. I liked the program so much that I ended up applying to become a mentor for the following academic year. The role encouraged me to use my previous knowledge of the program to steer the new participants in the right direction and be of support to them throughout the semester. I experienced the chance to develop personally and continued learning about the world around me, taking proactive steps to becoming a global citizen at my globally focused institution: Florida International Unioversity - Florida pinpointing our origin, which lies within our international globe, which sits within our vast university, derived from the Latin word, universitas meaning the whole, the universe. Our motto, simple:
